Last week the NLVMUG Conference 2014 took place at the “1931” conference centre in Den Bosch. Around 600 attendees enjoyed presentations about End User Computing, the Software Defined Datacenter and Cloud Operations & Management.
With speakers like Brian Gammage, Mike Laverick, Ruben Spruijt & Jeroen van der Kamp, Eric Sloof and others, it promised to be an interesting event.
Last year the Dutch VMUG steering committee decided to join the international VMUG organization – the NLVMUG Conference 2014 was the first full day conference for which the Dutch VMUG 2.0 was responsible.
The bar had been set high; the original Dutch VMUG Events had always been very successful. I spoke to different attendees at the event, and most people concluded that the NLVMUG Conference 2014 was a good continuation of a long tradition. The general conclusion was that the new NLVMUG Conference exudes professionalism with a community touch.
This year’s conference agenda was packed and included keynotes and three parallel tracks – a total of more than 25 sessions! Each track dealt with a different subject: End User Computing, Software Defined Datacenter and Cloud Operations & Management. Some old friends like Ruben, Eric, Willem and Gabrie presented at the NLVMUG Conference, but some new speaker were invited to talk about cloud & virtualization. Also some of the sponsors had a chance to present at the conference; Fusion IO, Nutanix, Nimble, Trend Micro, EMC and Veeam used this opportunity.
A new VMUG organization also means changes to the event; Of course the new VMUG logo is used for the signage at the event. On top of that, some new elements were added to the event’s agenda: Jan Willem Lammers ran a group discussion about the Software Defined Datacenter. Joep Piscaer, Martijn Baeke and yours truly ran a VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) bootcamp. With about 30 attendees the boot camp was a great success: most attendees were getting ready to pass the VCAP-DCA exam and are planning to pass VCAP-DCD in a next step. We had some great discussions about what to expect from the VCAP exam and how to prepare for this exam. We also talked about the design process for a vSphere project.
This year the NLVMUG Conference also had a Genius bar manned by leading bloggers such as the vmguru.nl team, Gabrie van Zanten of gabesvirtualworld.com and Eric Sloof of ntpro.nl. Attendees used this opportunity to discuss various topics with these experts. The NLVMUG Conference also had some international attendance; some staff members of the US vmug.com team had flown in and Liselotte Foverskov of the Danish VMUG joined the conference.
