I’ve just learned Symantec released NetBackup 7.5.0.5 solving some of the previous issues 7.5.0.4 had with vSphere 5.1:
“Sphere 5.1 Support – Consuming VDDK 5.0 U1
VMware backup host is now supported on the following operating systems:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 x64
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 x64
Bare Metal Restore is now supported on the following operating systems:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.
- Oracle Linux 5.7
- Oracle Linux 6.3
DB2 10.1 Support (streaming support only; snapshot backup/restore is not supported)”
Furthermore, regarding 7.5.0.5 Symantec now tells us:
“NetBackup 7.5.0.5 supports backup and recovery of vSphere 5.1.
Note: vSphere 5.1 adds guest operating system support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. In 7.5.0.5, NetBackup supports recovery of the entire virtual machine for those guest operating systems. File-level and application-level recovery will be supported in a future release.”
I presume earlier limitations (version 7.5.0.4) are now solved in 7.5.0.5. More information on page 12 and 13 of this document. There’s also a blog posting on the update available.
Earlier NetBackup / vSphere 5.1 issues
This is a follow up post on earlier postings about problems with NetBackup and vSphere 5.1: “vSphere 5.1: 3rd party backup software using VDDK 5.1 may encounter backup/restore issues” and “Symantec NetBackup 7.5.0.4 now (partially) supports vSphere 5.1“.
Also check this blogposting by Veeam on the issue. Kudos to Martijn Moret for pointing me on the update.
