Commvault just announced Simpana 10. This version of Simpana now support VMware vCloud as a possible backup source. On top of this, Commvault announced the following new features regarding VMware virtualization for the product:
- Highly Scalable Fault-Tolerant Backups Using Proxy Teaming -You can now use proxy teaming for load balancing and failover. This enables you to perform a backup for a large number of virtual machines in a limited backup window, you can use proxy teaming for load balancing and failover.
Learn more.. - Thin Disk Restore -NFS datastores do not track allocated portions of the VMDK. You can now optimize restores to trim unallocated portions and only write the actual data. This will save the space and time for restore.
Learn more… - vCloud Backup And Restore Support – You can now protect the vCloud-specific attributes of a virtual machine and restore it back to a vCloud.
Learn more… - Additional Filtering Options -You can now filter datastores and disks, along with virtual machines from a backup, using a simplified user interface.
Learn More… - Customized Automatic Discovery Options -You can now select the backup content using the admin-friendly virtualized infrastructure view. You can also set criteria for automatically selecting virtual machines for backup.
Learn More… - Virtual Server Protection Package -Virtual Server Protection (VS Protection) package is a new package for the backup and restore virtual machines. It contains all the components required, to protect the virtual machines. It provides a quick and easy way to back up the virtual machines.
Learn more… - Check Free Space On A Datastore – You can now set a threshold for the free space on a datastore. If a datastore doesn’t have the required free space, all the virtual machines residing in that datastore will be excluded from the backup. This will avoid the errors in the backup job and ensure the successful backup of all the other virtual machines.
Learn more… - Quiescing Of The File System And Applications – You can now disable the quiescing of the File System and Applications on a virtual machine during the regular and IntelliSnap backup. Backup operations will become faster if you avoid quiescing the operating system and applications.
Learn more… - Viewing The Backup Status Of Each Virtual Machine
You can now view the list of virtual machines backed up during a running backup job. The list gives details such as name of the proxy which performed the backup of the virtual machine, size of the backup data, type of backup etc. This enables you to actively monitor the backup of virtual machines and verify that all virtual machines in a subclient are protected.
Learn more… - Backup The Failed Virtual Machines – You can now perform an incremental backup to backup only those virtual machines which failed to backup in the previous backup job. This enables a faster incremental backup and ensures that all the virtual machines are backed up.
