At VMworld it’s not only VMware that’s announcing new stuff. On Tuesday Atlantis Computing will announce version 3.0 of their USX solution. Because HyperScale (Atlantis’ hyper converged solution) is using USX, we also get a new version of Hyperscale. This is a next update after the release of USX 2.2 back in February ’15 and the introduction of HyperScale in May.
USX 3.0 brings VVOLs to USX and HyperScale. The VASA provider, required for VVOLs, is part of the USX manager. USX sits between your storage solution and the hypervisor, which means that in some way VVOLs now become available for all available SAN solutions if you’re using USX. Because HyperScale is using USX, HyperScale can now also leverage VVOLs. This makes Atlantis the first and currently only hyper converged solution that supports VVOLs. You can check the HCL here to get an overview of supported VVOL solutions.
Another new feature in USX 3.0 is SmartSnap, which will offload your vSphere level (vCenter) snapshots to Atlantis USX. USX uses FastClone to snap a virtual machine using meta-data manipulation only. This makes snapshotting pretty fast, because a copy on write is not required.
With Remote Replication, also new in USX 3.0, you can replicate between USX and HyperScale instances. Currently a one hour RPO is available; initial configuration is simple and just “one click”.
The last things Atlantis introduced is Atlantis Insight. Atlantis Insight provides you options for proactive software updates “with the push of a button” and alert & log messages sent to Atlantis for timely case resolution. Going forward, new features wil be added to Atlantis Insight.
The official press release on USX 3.0 and HyperScale is expected tomorrow.
