Once again Barcelona is hosting VMworld Europe! The 2013 title for the event is Defy Convention. During tuesday’s keynote some interesting announcements were made. Some of the highlights are summarized in this article:
- vCloud Automation Center 6.0 (vCAC) was announced and is the successor to 5.2. vCAC 6.0 now incorporates vCloud Application Director for application deployment. vCAC 6.0 will support VMware vCloud Hybrid Service, VMware NSX and Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack-based cloud environments.
- vCenter Operations Manager Suite 5.8 was announced. The new release will offer enhanced performance analytics for business-critical applications, including Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL Server. In addition, VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.8 will introduce analytics for a broad range of storage vendors and devices to help administrators pinpoint configuration errors, resources issues and performance bottlenecks. New monitoring dashboards delivered out of the box provide deeper visibility into applications running on Microsoft Hyper-V and Amazon Web Services. Storage analytics will also be included in vCops 5.8.
- vCenter Log Insight 1.5, including enhanced integration with vCops and simplifying content pack development.
vSphere Data Protection 5.5 – Powered by EMC Avamar, VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced delivers industry-leading storage-efficiency for backups, unique capabilities to accelerate recovery and unparalleled integration with VMware vSphere. VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.5 Advanced will feature new capabilities including network-efficient backup data replication, integration with EMC Data Domain, a new Microsoft SharePoint agent, and automated backup verification. Customers will now benefit from disaster recovery protection, enhanced scalability and global deduplication with EMC Data Domain, and granular, application-consistent backups for Microsoft SharePoint.- VMware acquires desktone, which enables multi-tenancy, selfservice, grid based desktop as a service.
- Several updates to VMware’s Horizon Suite consisting of View, Mirage and Workspace were announced: VMware View 5.3 was announced, VMware Horizon Mirage 4.3 was announced. Sony Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z will now support the dual persona capability through VMware Horizon Workspace.
- VMware Horizons Suite 5.3 will include Virtual SAN.
- VMware Expands vCloud Hybrid Service to Europe, VMware to Rollout vCloud Hybrid Service in the United Kingdom.
- Integration of VMware Hybrid Cloud Management™ Solutions – VMware is announcing new integrations between vCloud Hybrid Service and hybrid cloud management solutions to add to its integration with vSphere Web Client, vCloud Application Director, Hyperic and Configuration Manager. VMware vSphere Web Client – VMware will release a new plug-in in December that will allow administrators to directly manage vCloud Hybrid Service using a browser and the vSphere web client. VMware vCloud® Automation Center™ 5.2 and 6.0 – vCloud Hybrid Service is certified as fully compatible with vCloud Automation Center 5.2 and 6.0.
- Virtual volumes (vVols) tech preview and partner demos will be available.
- Virsto (recently acquired by VMware) write cache is now available.
- VMware NSX is now general available.
- Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to the cloud options available Q1 2014.
