Commvault Virtual Machine Archiving
Talking about Commvault products: I recently had a good discussion with my colleague Martijn Moret, datamanagement consultant at PQR. Martijn demoed a nice feature of Commvault Simpana 10 called Virtual Machine (VM) archiving. VM archiving was already introduced in august 2013 and enables virtual machine sprawl through intelligent archiving. VM sprawl has always been a serious problem, because it’s very easy to deploy VMs.
Commvault VM archiving finds, relocates and retires stale or orphaned VMs during the backup process. VM archiving reduces storage hardware costs by automatically moving powered-off VMs from Tier-1 disks to to more cost-efficient, longer retention tiers, either on disk or in the cloud, using VMware Storage vMotion. Relocated VMs can be archived at the same time or later.
The solution integrates with Simpana software’s Virtual Server Agent (VSA) for backup and recovery of virtual machines. More information is available in this article or just contact Martijn through his own blog.
