This is an interesting promotion I ran in today…you can now test VMware Site Recovery 90 days for free! For those who don’t know Site Recovery, it is VMware’s Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) offering, that runs on top of VMware Cloud on AWS (VMConAWS).
Site Recovery is natively integrated into VMConAWS and provides Site Recovery Manager like orchestration and automation capabilities. This means you can do orchestrated disaster recovery: failover, failback and a test failover. While some cloud based DR options are more focussed on only the failover to the cloud, with Site Recovery you’re in control and you can move your workloads to and from the cloud. Site Recovery supports an interactive recovery plan which allows you to define a startup order for your VMs leveraging different priority levels. Non-disruptive testing is part of the offering, and Site Recovery also provides some detailed reporting options.
Site Recovery is not only natively integrated into VMConAWS, but also integrated into your on-premises HTML5 vSphere Client. While VMConAWS uses an architecture based on vSphere, vSAN and NSX…this is not a requirements for your on-premises datacenter. It’s no problem to have a traditional storage solution, and if you have don’t have NSX on-premises you’re also perfectly fine. Site Recovery leverages vSphere Replication, that supports RPOs between 5 minutes and 24 hours.
Note that it’s required that you have an existing VMConAWS subscription, Site Recovery is an add-on for VMConAWS. BUT, it no problem to use a 1 host subscription for testing, or use 3 hosts for the price of 2 option. Of course the production option (4+ hosts) is also supported. More details on this are here.
